誰「Who am I」:

My name is William Milberry and I am from the United States. My background is Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics. I spent many years working as a systems analyst in a medical school of a large university. While it was a wonderful career, I knew that I wouldn't feel complete until I pursued my dream of living and working in Japan, so I took the big step of moving the other side of the world.

I now work as an educator for a prefectural board of education in Kyushu, Japan. I speak English and Japanese.

This web site is here to showcase another passion of mine however, photography. I've always appreciated art and have worked with graphic arts in various capacities over the years. A few years ago I became interested in photography because I found that I could bring together both the technical and artistic in order to create images.

My personal style varies a lot because I love to experiment, however it often leans towards the artistic. I'll leave photojournalism and documentary style work up to those who are better suited for it. I just want to create beautiful and compelling images.

I shoot color, B&W, and infrared using both film and digital. I develop my own film, and some of my infared work is done with digital cameras that I personally custom modified to increase their near-infrared sensitivity by about 10 stops. This comes from my technology background.

While photography hasn't been my day job yet, my work has been published in various places such a univeristy physics textbooks, and music band CD inserts.

Artists Statement:

While there may be no such thing as "purity" in photography because there are ALWAYS subjective factors involved, I like to challenge myself to keep my images as true as possible to the light that entered my lens. To that end I enjoy doing as much in-camera as possible and limiting digital manipulation of my images. My goal is to take photos that are as close to "complete" out of the camera as possible. I greatly admire Ansel Adams, however I diverge from some of his views. He once said "the negative is like a composed score and the print is the performance." I want my negative (be it film or digital) to be my performance. Only then can I feel comfortable saying that my images capture the hidden beauty around us and don't just reflect added elements.

One frequent charactistic of note in my work however is that I don't delve too much into "the human experience." As a human I live "the human experience" and don't feel compelled to document it very much (even though I enjoy the work of other's in this field.) I'm interested at capturing the beauty of this world that is right in front of our eyes, but so easily missed..

ユーフォーに付いて「About UFOs」:

As a humorous side, I don't believe in UFO's at all. I am simply amused by UFO imagery, especially whimsical and cute UFOs. The UFO's decorating my web site were rendered with 3D modeling software when I became interested in 3D animation for a short while a few years ago.

To answer any questions before they are asked ... no, in the thousands of photos I've taken I've never captured a UFO :-)
