彼女

As I said in my last post, I’m not currently having fun with sterile, overly clean, digital photos anymore so I’ve been shooting film, trying to create images which are affected by their medium and have character without digital manipulation.

This photo is as-shot on IR film with no digital editing.

Candid street shots from Taipei

While I was in Taiwan I did a little candid street photography of the people of Taipei.  They fascinated me because I knew very little about the culture or history there.  They struck me as clearly coming from Chinese origins but being extremely modern.  Before visiting Taiwan I always kind of categorized "Taiwanese" with "Chinese" in my head, but they really are their own country and their own people.

Also, I love black and white but am fairly disenchanted with the flatness of B&W images that are derived from digital color images, so I’ve ordered a 35mm film SLR.  I’ve never shot film before other than using a point-n-shoot for completely uncontrolled photos, so this should be a photography growing experience. I want to shoot some B&W film for a while …

The people of Taipei

I’ve always liked candid street shots, but never really had the confidence to do a lot of good ones.  Good street shots require you to simple pull out your camera, aim it at a complete stranger, and take the photo regardless of who’s watching or if they might turn and see you.

In Taipei since I looked like a tourist and couldn’t speak the local language, I was partially absolved of the guilt and did some candid photos.

I loved this shot of a Taipei woman looking out the window of the train.  I’m a bit upset because the train was moving at the photo is actually blurred, it only looks sharp in the downsized version here on the web.

Over the next few days I’m going to be posting more of my candid Taipei photos.

Continuing Korea cuteness

Even though I was only there for a few days in one city that has a distinctive feel from the rest of Korea because it is a major port city, I really loved the country and the people.  The thought actually occurred to me that I might like to try living there some day …

As a sequel to my last cute photo from Korea, here is an adorable Korean child I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of.  I had my camera aimed at her when she looked right at me and I took the shot.

Hugs in Korea

I’ve been pretty lazy about posting my photos from my trip to Pusan, South Korea and Taipei, Taiwan.  I had such an amazing experience and saw so many great things.  I guess instead of posting photos like it was a sight-seeing vacation, I’ve been contemplating and taking in everything I saw and experienced, which was enough to change my views about this world and human interactions (for the better!)

I went to Pusan and Taiwan alone.  I went alone so I could be more approachable by the locals and interct with them more naturally and really experience the places first hand.  Having another English speaker, while fun in most cases, makes you less approachable and somehow keeps you in your own world to a certain extent.  I did meet some friends in Taipei who were also there traveling, but didn’t really spend time with them (sorry guys!)

Below are two girls in Pusan offering free hugs in a crowded shopping and entertainment district.  I made sure to get my free hugs!

Saga Castle

I wasn’t 100% accurate in my last post.  I have a little time today, so I decided to post some photos I took back at the end of October.

I randomly decided to take a little trip down to Saga Castle in Saga City, Saga Prefecture Japan.  I lucked out!  On that day they happened to be having a fairly elaborate re-enactment with dozens an dozens of people in period costume.

I shot this candid photo of one of the re-enactors.  I wonder what she was thinking …

Yakitori girl

Nov, 1, 2007: Yakitori girl
A few weeks ago I went to an enkai for one of my schools. Afterwards I was generously invited by the principle and vice principle to an after party gathering at a yakitori place. One of the teachers I was speaking with kept trying to hook me and one of the girls working there up. A few weeks later while biking by the place I saw one o fthe girls and stopped and talked to her for a few minutes. I asked her if I could take her photo and took this snapshot of her. Unfortunatly I don’t remember her name ^_^;
